EVANSVILLE, IN - The Fox & Hound English Pub & Grill here became the 10,000th location posted at the Barcade website, which went live just one year ago. Since passing the milestone in mid-February, the number of locations in the searchable database, which can be found at barcade.com, continues to climb at a steady rate.
"As our list of locations grows," said Barcade technical manager Ryan Cravens, "so does our audience, and they are looking for great locations where they can go and spend time with their friends."
Since its launch in March 2004 as a site for players of arcade games in bars, taverns, restaurants and arcades across the United States and Canada, Barcade has become the number one website in the coin-operated industry. This ranking has been verified by Alexa Web Information Service, which measures site traffic, user reviews and other information about more than four billion Web pages.
Barcade was created to reach out to players in street locations and inform them about the industry. It's a coin-op Internet portal, where players and the industry can share information about games, locations and promotions not unlike what GameSpot is to the consumer video gaming entertainment market.
Operators and players can list sites by going to the "Locations" page and clicking on the "Add a location" button. Information is verified by Barcade before it is added to the database, which takes no longer than 24 hours. Players can rate locations by games, food and so on. Similarly, adding event announcements can be done by going to the "Events" page and clicking on the "Add an event" button.
Players can set up an account by clicking on the "sign up free" hyperlink at the upper right hand corner of the Barcade home page, Cravens explained. Players can participate in discussions to share information about games. The "My Barcade" module allows players to create and edit their personal profiles, which includes what games they like to play and were they go to play them.
"It is quick and painless and it will allow participants to post reviews on games and locations as well as allowing the player to post on the discussion boards," he said.
The site also features a "Previews" section, an archive of games with descriptions and photos that now consists of more than 400 game records.
"Barcade is the heaviest trafficked coin-op site," Cravens reported. "The majority of the people who are on our site are players looking for places to play their favorite games. Barcade continues to build our database of game descriptions, locations and news items every day and players keep coming back to see what is new on Barcade."
To help build membership and traffic, Barcade is planning promotions and contests. A recent promotion gave away a backglass from the new "Elvis" pinball machine.
"We have seen a bigger response from operators and manufacturers in the past six months," Cravens reported. "Many folks are impressed that we have already become the most popular website in coin-op and we just keep growing. Operators are posting more events at the request of players, and the manufacturers want to get their games out in front of more eyeballs.
