INDIANAPOLIS -- Gov. Mitch Daniels on March 19 signed a new law banning smoking in Indiana's workplaces except for bars, private clubs and casinos. | SEE STORY
The bill's legislative sponsors said they plan to introduce another measure next year that would extend the smoking ban to taverns and other exempted locations.
The original version of the bill also applied to bars and passed the Indiana House. However, it was stripped (with compromises expanding the number of exemptions) to ensure subsequent Senate passage, which was achieved by a narrow margin.
When its smoking ban takes effect on July 1, Indiana will become the 40th state to prohibit public smoking statewide.
