Ecast And Partners Award $2 Million In Jukeboxes

SAN FRANCISCO — Ecast, a leading provider of digital music to downloading jukeboxes, reported that its recent sales promotion awarded more than $2 million in free jukebox hardware to music vendors nationwide. The “Get One Free” jukebox promotion, which ran from January 1 through March 31, triggered one of the strongest quarterly expansions in the digital music category, and is being followed by a similar promotion that kicked off on April 1.

“This was Ecast’s most successful sales promotion ever, with over 170 operators from across the country participating and more than 1,500 jukeboxes shipped by our partners,” said Bob Cooney, Ecast’s vice-president of manufacturing business development.

The digital music provider’s partners include Rock-Ola Manufacturing, NSM Music and View Interactive Entertainment, all manufacturers of digital jukeboxes that are compatible with the Ecast network. Both NSM and View have been marketing conversion kits that enable vendors to update legacy compact disc jukes to touchscreen, Internet-enabled music systems.

The Ecast vice-president noted that some existing digital music operators took advantage of the two-for-one opportunity by purchasing as many as 50 conversion kits for the cost of 25. However, the most striking result of the promotion, he underscored, was that 100 operators signed on to become Ecast subscribers for the first time.

Rock-Ola’s president, John Schultz, added that the first quarter’s “Get One Free” promotion was a compelling incentive, reducing the price of a Rock-Star, one of Rock-Ola’s digital models, equipped with a 900W. Peavey amplifier, to just $3,600.

“This promotion was not only directed to customers who could put out a lot of units like past Ecast promotions,” Schultz said, “It really created an opportunity for everyone to get on the Ecast platform. We had one operator purchase 100 units, and we saw a ton of repeat sales, so obviously it was meaningful to operators.”

NSM’s vice-president of operations, Tony Lantz, said his company had to work overtime to keep up with demand for its Evolution conversion kit. “With the Ecast promotion, you could upgrade an old NSM box to an almost entirely brand new Ecast-powered digital for $1,750.”

A specialist in conversion products for legacy CD equipment, View is reporting hundreds of kit giveaways fueled by the first-quarter promotion. Rick Caviglia, the company’s president, described the Ecast program as “an exciting and affordable way for operators to turn their CD jukeboxes into broadband money-makers.” View’s JukeBoost line of conversion kits updates some of Rowe International’s most popular floor models – in the A/B, C/D, E, CD-51 and Eagle classes – along with Rowe’s second-generation wall-mounting jukeboxes.

Ecast bankrolled this promotion, and others like it, to help its manufacturer partners remain competitive, and to grow the number of jukebox clients connected to its location-based entertainment network,where it generates recurring revenue. Cooney told VT that there will be close to 8,000 jukebox clients, after they all report in, connected to the network at the end this year’s first quarter.

Ecast and its partners are hoping to continue their first-quarter successes with a second-quarter promotion that they say will allow large operators to “go all Ecast” more quickly and economically than ever. Called “Get Free Jukes," the program also is designed to win over music operators who have not yet acquired and deployed digital jukebox equipment and service, which – on the Ecast network – is generating $300 weekly per jukebox.

Similar in the incentive structure to its first-quarter predecessor, “Get Free Jukes” awards one free conversion kit for every dedicated model or kit purchased; it also awards one free dedicated digital model for every two purchased. New products included in the program are Rock-Ola’s Fireball conversion kit, which was recently introduced, and NSM’s Chameleon jukebox.

“Due to the overwhelming success of Ecast’s recent ‘Get One Free’ promo, our partners convinced us to keep it going for one more quarter, starting April 1.” Cooney said. “And we have sweetened the pot this time around.”

For its part, NSM is offering a free Evolution CD-to-Ecast conversion to operators who purchase its new Chameleon, Nostalgia or Phoenix jukeboxes, or the Evolution kit. A new incentive for the second quarter rewards operators who make two purchases with two free Evolution kits or a free Chameleon.

Operators who purchase any two Rock-Ola digital jukeboxes or its new conversion kits will receive a free Rock-Star jukebox. The new promotion awards operators who purchase any one Rock-Ola digital jukebox or kit with the option to receive one of the Fireball conversions, which upgrade Rock-Ola’s CD lines – except for the CD-9000 model – to Ecast-powered downloading systems. The manufacturer said the promotion could be combined with its 7.99% financing program available through Firestone Financial Corp.

Music operators who are considering updating their Rowe CD equipment with View’s versatile JukeBoost kits will be aided by the “Get Free Jukes” program, which awards a free conversion kit for every purchase.

“With these powerful promotions, the prices of Ecast-powered jukeboxes are as low as they have ever been,” said Ecast’s director of sales, Steven Kellam. He points out that the program reduces the Rock-Star’s cost to under $3,700 and a JukeBoost kit to $1,350.

Ecast has placed no limit on the number of times the “Get Free Jukes” program can be used for units purchased by June 30, but will not allow it to be combined with other Ecast-specific sales promotions.
