BOSTON -- Mayor Thomas Menino issued an executive order on April 7 that expands his ban on sugar-sweetened drinks in schools to include all city properties and functions.

The new rule, which furthers Menino's ongoing mission to foster healthier lifestyles among Bostonians, applies to vending machines, cafeterias, concessions stands and beverages served at meetings. In 2004, the mayor banned junk food and soft drinks from vending machines at city public schools.

The mayor's executive order establishes color-coded standards for determining what beverages can be allowed on city property. Beverages coded "red" -- banned from city properties -- include sugar-sweetened beverages such as presweetened teas and juices with added sugars, and refrigerated coffee, energy, sports and nondiet soft drinks.

City buildings have six months before they are required to phase out the sale of "red" beverages. They will also be barred from promoting such drinks onsite, including on banners, panels and vending machines.

Drinks considered to be the healthiest -- coded "green" -- include bottled water, flavored and unflavored seltzer water, low-fat milk, and unsweetened soymilk, will be allowed on city property.

"Yellow"-coded beverages are diet sodas, diet iced teas, 100% juices, low-calorie sports drinks, low-sugar sweetened beverages, sweetened soymilk and flavored sweetened milk. They will also be allowed.
