UTRECHT, The Netherlands -- Jonathan Joosten, previously a music producer and the editor of a European pinball magazine, has published the first edition of an upscale print magazine that targets pinball fans, collectors and operators.

Pinball Magazine, a $15-per-issue English language glossy publication, will appear irregularly, said Joosten. Readers will go online to purchase individual editions as a series of one-offs, rather than by subscription, and will receive their copies by mail.

The first issue, released at an August pinball event in the United Kingdom, was 112 pages and boasted advertising from 14 pinball-related buyers such as the Pacific Pinball Museum, Tilt Amusement and others. Copies were shipping to the U.S. as of mid-September.

Most issues will be devoted to a single topic but no set length has been adopted, the publisher said. Joosten said if he gets an 80-page interview with a pinball expert who has interesting stories to tell, he will print an issue with 80 pages of editorial plus whatever advertising he can attract.

The inaugural issue, however, did not follow the single-feature format. Contents included an interview with pinball legend Roger Sharpe; a look at popular online community Pinside; an introduction to the International Flipper Pinball Association; a visit to the Pacific Pinball Museum; and other topics.

Joosten said a French translation of some of the first issue is available for free online as a market test to determine whether there is sufficient demand to publish a print edition in French.
