WASHINGTON -- The National Restaurant Association is piloting Greener Restaurants, a national program to recognize restaurants' environmental sustainability efforts.
A limited number of restaurants are participating in the pilot before the association launches the program industrywide in the next few months.
The goal of Greener Restaurants is to help restaurant operators save money and manage costs while incorporating sustainability practices throughout their operations. It also helps restaurants market their efforts to "go greener" to guests, both onsite and online.
The program comprises a checklist at greenerrestaurants.comfrom which participants select areas of focus and build profiles. The checklist specifies smaller steps, such as using low-energy light bulbs, as well as larger ones like equipment changes and remodeling. Operators are provided with resources and instructional videos on the website to help them implement each practice and report their progress.
The online profiles will become part of a consumer- oriented website offering a nationwide search engine. Participating restaurants will also receive a door decal and other marketing materials to highlight their commitment to sustainable practices.
