ESSEN, Germany -- Kiosk Europe Expo 2009 and Digital Signage Expo 2009, which will be held here concurrently from May 5 through 7, will offer a panorama of the state of the art in digital signage and self-service solutions (see VT, April). More than 150 international companies have announced plans to exhibit at the event, which is organized in conjunction with the international retail marketing association POPAI (originally Point-Of-Purchase Advertising International) through its D-A-CH (Germany, Austria and Switzerland) unit.

Live demonstrations in the Digital Signage Content Center and in the Self-Service Futures Parlor will complement a daily series of open forum presentations to bring showgoers up to date on the latest retail-display and self-service technologies and concepts.

High-profile international companies plan to introduce their latest solutions at the combined shows. Oki will unveil its next generation of compact kiosk systems with integrated applications for fingerprint recognition and passport scanning. Deutsche Telekom will showcase its Interactive Citylight Display (ICLD), which features an 82" touchscreen panel plus an auxiliary touch-sensitive interface that viewers can use to select more detailed information about the product or service being advertised. It keeps accurate records of which messages are accessed from which location, and how often.

As part of the new Digital Awards 2009 program sponsored by POPAI D-A-CH, selected entrants will conduct demonstrations at the Digital Signage Content Center. Only solutions that are already in use in several locations can be entered for the awards, so the Center will offer an overview of the best available technology on the market today. Visitors will be able to vote for the best digital signage solution, the best interactive solution and the best-integrated solution, among other categories.

Presentations will be made daily at the open forum, which is free for registered visitors. Experts will explain how users in various sectors can apply digital signage and self-service solutions to the task of providing cost-effective communication with their target audiences.

Invidis Consulting and Computer Reseller News will preview the results of their market study of developments at distribution and system houses. The integration of RFID and Near Field Communication (NFC) will be an important topic this year, both for the forum and for the exhibitors, the show's organizers predict.

In the Self-Service Futures Parlour, the Institute for New Media (INM) will offer insights into the future of self-service solutions, demonstrating possible future scenarios with the help of "augmented reality" that supplements the real environment with virtual information.

The 150-plus exhibitors include companies operating at an international level, such as 42 media group, Deutsche Telekom, Epson, Hyundai, IBM and partners, Narcomm, NEC, Oki, Scala, Seen Media, Sharp, Videro and Wincor Nixdorf. Sponsors are Friendlyway, Hughes, Impuls TV, Provisio, Star Micronics and Werkstation. According to Jens Schindler, managing director of Kiosk Expo's management organization, hf media & events (Cambridge, England), attendance is expected to equal last years' inaugural event.

The shows will be held at the Essen Fair facility (Messe Essen); entrance is free for pre-registered visitors. Registration may be made at kioskeurope-expo.com or digitalsignageexpo.eu.
