Former AMOA President Garland Garrett Sr. Dies
WILMINGTON, NC -- Garland B. Garrett Sr., who served as president of the Amusement and Music Operators Association 1977-'78, died on Sept. 6. He was 85. A 60-year trade veteran and owner-operator of Cape Fear Music, Garrett was a co-founder of the North Carolina Amusement Association. The Charlotte News & Observer reported that Garrett was also president of the North Carolina Elks Association in 1971 and a deacon in his Baptist church. His son, Garland Garrett Jr., was also an operator and, more prominently, North Carolina's secretary of transportation at one time. Due to Alzheimer's disease in his final years, Garrett Sr. had gambling charges dismissed last year in a case stemming from Cape Fear's video poker operations.
Jukebox Distribution Changes In Texas And Oklahoma
HOUSTON, TX -- Rowe and Rock-Ola have announced changes in their distribution networks in the Southwest. Rowe has expanded the territory of its 25-year southern Texas distributor, H.A. Franz & Co., to all of Texas and Oklahoma on an exclusive basis. H.A. Franz & Co. maintains distribution and service facilities in Dallas, Houston and San Antonio, and has served the Texas and Oklahoma markets for more than five decades. Rock-Ola has appointed Commercial Music Co. and Commercial Music of Oklahoma to its distribution network. Commercial Music has been an established distributor since 1937.
CompUSA, NVIDIA Sponsor Team Of LAN Video Game Players
DALLAS, TX -- Big name corporate sponsorship, long a common practice in professional sports, is now coming to the world of online video game tournaments. CompUSA Inc. and NVIDIA Corp. announced that they will sponsor "Team 3D," a top group of professional game players, in key gaming competitions around the globe, including next month's World Cyber Games championships in South Korea where a $350,000 grand prize is at stake. (The event will focus on "Counterstrike," the hit game that is played in LAN game rooms and cyber cafes.) "Team 3D" thus becomes one of the first such groups to receive recognition and sponsorship dollars from major corporations.
