NEW YORK CITY – Nestlé Prepared Foods Co. said it plans to decrease the sodium content in its products by another 10% beyond reductions made earlier this decade.

The initiative will carry through 2015 and includes the company's popular Hot Pockets, Lean Pockets, Stouffer's, Lean Cuisine and Buitoni brands, which will undergo gradual but steady recipe changes in order to bring down sodium levels without impacting taste.

Nestlé began its gradual sodium reduction initiative in 2005. Sodium levels that were as high as 1,000mg. a serving in some products have since been reduced to 610mg. per serving across the Hot Pocket handheld sandwich line, and an average 606mg. per serving in the Lean Cuisine line. Both items are popular in vending.

Nestlé said its approach of "stepwise, moderate reductions" has helped consumers gradually adapt their taste for salt, making their choices more likely to last.
