WASHINGTON -- President Obama on Tuesday signed a food safety bill that gives the Food and Drug Administration new authority to prevent foodborne illness.
The new law -- the Food and Drug Administration Food Safety Modernization Act of 2010 (S. 510) -- marks the biggest overhaul to the U.S. food system in the past 70 years.
The FDA will have more power to inspect food, make mandatory recalls if a company does not volunteer to stop selling tainted products, trace food outbreaks to their source and step up food inspections.
Congress still has to approve $1.4 billion to fund the bill.
