ALPHARETTA, GA -- The National Automatic Merchandising Association's southern office has issued a bulletin asking operators to help defeat a proposed bottled water tax.

Florida State Sen. Evelyn Lynn (R-Ormond Beach) has introduced Senate Bill 78, which would levy a 6% tax on bottled water in containers of less than one gallon.

Lynn's proposal would add a 7.5ยข tax on $1.25 bottle of water sold in a vending machine. Since vending operators can't raise their prices by in penny and half-penny increments, the new tax would come out of their pockets, NAMA stressed.

The vending association is asking operators to contact their state senators and state representatives and ask them to stop the proposed tax by clicking here. NAMA has pre-loaded a draft message and the system will automatically find each operator's Florida elected officials.

"Thanks to friends in the Florida State Senate, we think we can stop this tax increase," NAMA said. "But we need to make our voice heard now if we are going to stop this tax."
