BRADY REINFORCES COMMITMENT TO GLOBAL VR LINES IN FLORIDA

SAN JOSE, CA , Global VR and Brady Distributing Co. announced an agreement in which Brady would become GVR's key distributor in Florida. Officials said the pact will serve the "immediate and long-term objectives of both companies as it relates to the sale and service of the entire Global VR product line" in the Sunshine State. "EA Sports PGA Tour Golf: Challenge Edition" is among the coin-operated video games currently offered by GVR. Brady president and chief executive Jon P. Brady said, "We are extremely pleased to expand our relationship with a fine business partner like Global VR. It's amazing what they've accomplished in such a short time in our industry Global VR has proven to us they are committed to this industry and we feel confident they will continue to serve it well in the future."

FECS MAY FACE TOUGH NEW LEGAL STANDARDS ON RIDES

SACRAMENTO, CA , The California Supreme Court ruled on June 16 that roller coasters, thrill rides and other attractions must be classed as "common carriers" and, therefore, regulated with the same scrutiny as cars, buses and trains. The Golden State ruling was announced, coincidentally, as U.S. senators and Florida lawmakers are calling for first-time federal regulation of theme park rides, following the June 13 death of a four-year-old boy on the "Mission: Space" ride at Walt Disney World in Orlando. Carole Sjolander, executive director of the International Association for the Leisure and Entertainment Industry, told VT last year that if the ongoing series of accidents and fatalities triggered tough new regulation for theme park rides, IALEI leaders were concerned that some attractions in family entertainment centers would also be impacted.

JAPANESE STATES BAN YOUTH ACCESS TO VIOLENT VIDEO GAMES

OSAKA, Japan , Claiming that violent video games helped motivate a student to attack an elementary school teacher recently, the Osaka Prefecture will restrict youth access to "violent" video games, press sources here are reporting. If approved by the region's legislative assembly, the ban will go into effect in September. According to the Mainichi News, the regional government also plans to require a committee of game manufacturers to create a video game rating system. News reports did not make clear whether the proposed ban and ratings would apply to coin-operated games in addition to home games. In May, Kanagawa Prefecture outlawed sales of the home video game "Grand Theft Auto 3"to players under 18.

LOUISIANA TO POKER OPERATORS: TOUGH LUCK

BATON ROUGE, LA , Operators here may be required to replace up to three-quarters of their old video poker games with new machines , at a cost of more than $10,000 each , after Gtech Corp. installs a new central computer system for the statewide legal gaming network. The total cost of such replacement could hit $108 million, according to the Times-Picayune. Some operators said they cannot afford upgrades on such a massive scale; the state's purchasing department said the government is not obliged to consider the cost to operators in its decision. Currently some 14,000 legal video pokers are operated in Louisiana.
