Kraft Launches South Beach Vend Entrees

Tim Sanford

NORTHFIELD, IL — Kraft Foods has introduced three breakfast specialties and three mainmeal items for vending, under the South Beach Diet brand. They conform to the nutritional guidelines of the famous diet developed by Florida cardiologist and author Dr. Arthur Agatston. They’ll make their formal industry debut at the National Automatic Merchandising Association Spring Expo in Las Vegas on March 23 and 24.

The hot breakfast choices, formulated for vending frozen, are tasty omelet wraps in Denver-Style, Southwestern Style and All American varieties. They’re rich in protein, packed two 130-g. servings per 9.2-oz. box, and designed for microwave reheating in two minutes.

The mainmeal selections, crafted for delivery through refrigerated food machines, include 6.45-oz. Grilled Chicken Caesar, 7.85-oz. Southwestern Style Chicken and 7.05-oz. Turkey & Bacon Club wrap sandwich kits.

"We know that busy lives and hectic schedules make it hard to eat right," said Howard Brandeisky, vice-president of South Beach Diet foods for Kraft. "That’s one reason why the entire line of South Beach Diet foods from Kraft provides nutritious and delicious options to enjoy any meal of the day, whether you’re following the principles of the South Beach Diet as part of a New Year’s resolution or simply looking for a nutritious meal or snack."

Kraft’s alliance with the South Beach Diet has produced more than 40 South Beach Diet convenience foods as well as South Beach Diet Recommended products, offering consumers many choices. South Beach Diet Recommended buttons appear on Kraft products ranging from Boca Burgers to Planters nuts.

The South Beach Diet is a weight-loss plan that encourages people to consume a variety of foods, ranging from lean sources of protein, reduced-fat cheeses and other dairy products, to whole grains, fruits and vegetables, and "right" fats like olive and canola oil.

"It has been a great revelation to me that weight loss is not about low carbs or low fat, but the right carbs and the right fats," Dr. Agatston explained. "My goal is to help change the way America eats. One thing that has been missing is the convenience factor, and now these new tools make nutritious eating even easier."

Dr. Agatston’s first book, The South Beach Diet, was published in April, 2003. It was #1 on the New York Times best-seller list for 38 weeks, and 8.5 million copies are in print in the United States alone. It is now available in paper from St. Martin’s Press. His second, The South Beach Diet Good Fats/Good Carbs Guide, has spent 18 weeks in first place on the Publishers Weekly best-seller list. And the new South Beach Diet Cookbook made its debut in first place on the New York Times best-seller list and, with more than 1.5 million copies, represents the largest first printing for a cookbook in publishing history.

The South Beach Diet is described online at southbeachdiet.com.
