PepsiCo Announces Global Goals For Product Lines, Environment

PURCHASE, NY -- PepsiCo has announced a range of new worldwide goals for product development, environmental impact and workplace practices. The new agenda was unveiled at the company's annual investor conference, held late in March at the Legends Club in the new Yankee Stadium (The Bronx, NY).

PepsiCo said that it is committed to achieving industry-leading nutrition objectives, including increasing the whole grains, fruits and vegetables, nuts, seeds and low-fat dairy items in its product portfolio; reducing average sodium in a serving in key global food brands by 25% by 2015; reducing average saturated fat per serving in key global food brands by 15% by 2020 and reducing average added sugar per serving in key global beverage brands by 25% by 2020.

The company also plans to display calorie counts and key nutrients in food and beverage packaging by 2012; eliminate direct sale of full-sugar soft drinks to primary and secondary schools around the world by 2012; invest in business and research and development to expand offerings of more affordable, "nutritionally relevant" products for underserved and lower-income communities; and expand PepsiCo Foundation and corporate contribution initiatives to promote healthier communities.

PepsiCo's environmental goals include reducing packaging weight by 350 million lbs. to avoid creation of 1 billion lbs. of landfill waste by 2012; work to eliminate all solid waste to landfills from PepsiCo's production facilities; and commit to an absolute reduction in gaseous hydrocarbon emissions across its global operations. The company also proposes to provide access to safe water to three million people in developing countries by the end of 2015.

"Talent sustainability" goals include enhancing workplace safety by continuing to reduce lost-time injury rates while striving to improve other occupational health and safety metrics through best practices; encourage associates to lead healthier lives; and match eligible associate charitable contributions globally, dollar for dollar, through the PepsiCo Foundation.
