UTICA, NY -- New from Upstate Networks Inc. is a device that allows Wiegand proximity-card technology to interface with the vending industry-standard multi-drop bus. Wiegand cards have found wide use in access control systems since their introduction in the 1980s.
The UNI Wiegand-to-MDB product, called W2MDB, is a hardware interface installed inside the vending machine. It is connected to a suitable RFID proximity reader mounted on the front of the vender, and uses a standard Internet connection to communicate with a central server. The custom-built server software provides various options for approval, tracking and billing.
UNI reports that the new system presently supports GE model T-520SW and HID Global 125-kHz. proximity readers, and is Web-addressable. It uses 24V. DC power, drawing 750 mA, and is fitted with a 6-pin Molex plug for the MDB connection and an 8-pin terminal post for the Wiegand reader, plus RJ-45 Ethernet and USB type A connectors (the latter for data access and programming). The apparatus measures 6" x 8" x 1".
According to the manufacturer, the W2MDB is well suited for employee and/or student vending machine access. It offers the convenience of using an ID badge to vending machine purchases, said UNI founder and president Chris Smolen. “Rewards, incentives and purchases are completely managed, using the Wiegand to MDB,” he added.
