WILMINGTON, DE -- Gov. Jack Markell signed into law on June 22 a bill that prohibits food and beverages containing trans fat in Delaware's schools. It applies to vending machines and school cafeterias.
The legislation, designated DE H3, prohibits public schools from making available or serving food or beverages with more than 0.5g. of artificial trans fat to students in kindergarten through 12th grade. It would not apply to food and drink sold at events open to the wider community, such as athletic games and school plays.
Trans fat, created by hydrogenating oil, has emerged in recent years as a prime suspect in high cholesterol, heart attacks and other health problems.
The new law will go into effect 90 days after its enactment in late September.
