Looking for something fresh, fun and different at this month's AMOA/Fun Expo? How about some speakers who are actually fun to listen to, as well as informative? Here's a sampling (all sessions take place in the Las Vegas Convention Center).
"Meet the Music Makers" arguably boasts more star power than any other AMOA-IALEI session. Singer Tracy Byrd has released Top 10 albums and Number One songs since 1992. He's joined by Carlos Linares, attorney for a top executive at the Recording Industry of America Association, and by Jukebox Licensing Office executive director Mike Vaughan. Free admission: Thursday, Sept. 30, 1:00 PM-2:15 PM in room S115.
"Betting the Odds" updates Bob Snyder's hit seminar, which riveted state association leaders in January with demos of crooked gaming equipment and "carnie" scams. Gaming expert Bob will also discuss ways to beat the Vegas casinos, legally. Attorney Bob will explain how amusement operators can stay on the right side of gambling laws, an often-tricky question. Complimentary food and beverages. Free admission: room S113 on Friday, Oct. 1, 1:00 PM-2:15 PM.
"Promotions That Pump Up the Profit" also updates the proven hit that pumped up Ohio operators last year (free breakfast, too). Former coin-op pros Brad Circone and Bill Kistner are now marketing pros. Free admission: room S113, Saturday, Oct. 2, 8:00 AM-9:15 AM.
"Salesmanship - Closing the Deal" is presented by Gary Spencer of California Coin (Paso Robles, CA). Down-home Gary is entertaining every time he opens his mouth, and he's got a shrewd business mind. Free admission: room S115, Saturday, Oct. 2, 10:30 AM-11:45 AM.
"You CAN Teach An Old Dog New Tricks," promises industry consultant Jim Newbury. It's for industry veterans who have heard all it all (or think they have). I haven't heard the speaker, but the premise sure sounds provocative. Hot dog lunch served. Advance registration required. IALEI member price: $10 before Sept. 17 or $20 afterward: Thursday, Sept. 30, Noon-2:00 PM, North Hall.
"Me to We: Moving To The We Generation" is the IALEI keynote address by Marc Kielburger, to be given at the IALEI annual membership meeting. Marc will share stories and tangible advice on how to leverage your passion, drawing on his extensive work with Free The Children and Leaders Today, which led him to meet youth and adult changemakers in over 40 countries. IALEI promises that listeners will leave feeling energized, engaged and informed. Breakfast included. Free admission: Thursday, Sept. 30, 8:00 AM-10:00 AM (meeting also includes IALEI new officers, Golden Token Awards, and more).
"All In a Day's Work: Operational Insights Into FECs" will be presented by "Mr. Enthusiasm," operator Michael Getlan of Amusement Consultants (New Rochelle, NY). Mike is electric, supercharged, zany, and creative. He has enough energy and humor for 10 seminars. Admission cost: included in Fun Academy package deal. Thursday, Sept. 30, 2:45 PM-4:15 PM.
Finally, in a shameless plug for myself and my press colleagues, allow me to recommend "Learn from the Best: Traits of Successful Operators." RePlay's Steve White and Play Meter's Bonnie Theard will join yours truly in presenting stories, quotes and quips culled from our collective "four decades plus" of reporting on coin-op amusements. Free admission: Friday, Oct. 1, 10:45 AM-Noon, room S115.
This list is by no means exhaustive. From Frank Price to Frank Seninsky, from Kara McClure to Phil DeAngelo , and dozens more , the AMOA/Fun Expo educational program offers experienced, informative and dynamic speakers. So come on down! Chuckles (and learning) guaranteed.
