FL Lawmakers Move Toward Ban On Sweepstakes Videogames

TALLAHASSEE, FL -- A bill to ban Internet sweepstakes videogames has been resurrected with its Aug. 22 passage by a 10-5 vote in the Business & Consumer Affairs Subcommittee in the Florida House, according to the News Service of Florida.
Sponsored by state Rep. Scott Plakon (R-Longwood), the bill (HB3) was originally introduced last year, but died in the Regulated Industries Committee at the close of the legislative session on March 9, 2012. | SEE BILL HISTORY
Sources estimate that Florida has 1,000 Internet cafés with sweepstakes games, employing as many as 10,000 people.
A campaign finance report showed that sweepstakes game operators have contributed more than $700,000 in support of statewide candidates in the upcoming election, said News4Jax.com.
