Sega Rolls Out Primeval Hunt Deluxe Shooter

Larisa Jayne Shewczyk

ELK GROVE VILLAGE, IL — Sega Amusements U.S.A. debuted the final production version of its deluxe Primeval Hunt videogame, a first-person shooter that is appealing because it does not promote or depict violence toward humans.

Units are outfitted with touchscreen consoles that control certain elements of gameplay, and run on the company’s Lindbergh Hardware System, a PC-based gaming platform used with coin-op titles such as After Burner: Climax, Power Smash 3 and House Of The Dead 4. The game will be available in standard cabinets in the future (this option already is available in Europe), officials said.

The touchscreen console stands about waist-high and extends from the front of the cabinet. During play, it displays a map of the current game stage (there are 12 in all, plus a hidden stage), showing the locations of the players and their dinosaur prey. Players touch the map to drag their character icons to indicate which way they would like to travel; the main monitor reflects their selections through onscreen action. The touchscreen also is used to control a rocket launcher weapon at certain points in the game.

Two pump-action plastic rifles are mounted on each side of the console, allowing for cooperative play between two individuals. Speakers inside the butt of each gun bring a higher level of audio authenticity, a design element that is a coin-op first, officials said. They control the three main weapons used in play: a shotgun, a rifle and a bow.

A 62-in.-wide high-definition monitor displays main game action, which takes place on an island with jungle-like terrain. Players are ambushed by a variety of prehistoric predators when hunting the “target dinosaur,” making accurate shooting and wise use of ammunition important for success. To unlock additional stages, they must eliminate a set number of dinosaurs with the given ammunition in the allotted timeframe.

Deluxe cabinets measure 55 ins. W. x 70 ins. D. x 93 ins. H., and weighs 553 lbs.

Sega said that financing options for the game are in the works, and distributors will have information about product availability. The coompany is headquartered at 800 Arthur Ave., Elk Grove Village, IL 60007, and inquiries can be made at tel. (888) 877-2669 or online at sau.sega.com.
