PHILADELPHIA -- AMI Entertainment Network has demonstrated a kit that converts the popular NGX digital downloading jukebox into a music video playback system. The company also has unveiled a number of software upgrades for its BarLink and Tap TV systems.

The NGX video jukebox project was announced at this year’s Amusement Expo. The new NGX kit will enable jukebox patrons to select from a menu of thousands of high-definition music videos featuring the world’s most popular artists, as well as all their favorite songs from AMI’s music library. Music video playback will be offered as a one-credit upgrade, thus increasing operator revenue. Video is played on a location's TV screens.

Coin-operated entertainment devices screening motion pictures of musical performances date back to the middle of the last century, and a number of systems based on then-new videotape and Laserdisc technology received considerable attention in the early 1980s. Persistent difficulties with licensing music video performances inhibited their further development, but changes in music distribution have resolved many of the difficulties, and AMI’s long experience in negotiating performance licenses has done the rest.

“The time is right to bring music video to jukeboxes,” said AMI president and chief executive Mike Maas, who explained the new video initiative at the 2013 Amusement Expo in Las Vegas. | SEE STORY

The NGX kit, which was demonstrated at the recent IAAPA Attractions Expo, is scheduled to ship early next year. A beta test will begin on Dec. 2, and as of now AMI has cleared more than 6,000 videos, which have been provided by the labels. AMI is carefully vetting each video for its quality.

"We're excited about the video offering because many bars have more TVs than they need," said AMI's John Margold. "Bar owners want good video content to engage patrons. Unless a major sports event is airing, it's not uncommon to find Judge Judy, The Weather Channel, ESPN and CNN, among other staples, on bar TVs with the sound off. And we have something more engaging."

Separately, AMI revealed the latest round of upgrades for its BarLink application. BarLink extends patrons’ ability to interact with their location’s AMI jukebox through smartphones and other wireless devices. The new features include user playlists, secure credit card caching and support for NGX jukeboxes fitted with the new video kits.

AMI also announced the latest update for Tap TV, which now incorporates Twitter and Facebook integration, support for custom promotional images and all-new Trivia content. This content is automatically updated and expanded, independently of the new release.
