STEVENS POINT, WI -- The University of Wisconsin has banned the sale of beverages in plastic bottles through vending machines on its Stevens Point campus.

Its new vending contract, which takes effect this fall, calls for vending machines to be stocked exclusively with drinks in aluminum cans. The only exceptions are for products like sports drinks that are only available in plastic bottles.

With the elimination of bottled water from the machines, the university said it is encouraging students and faculty to carry their own bottles and refill them at campus water fountains.

The school said the switch to cans not only is more environmentally friendly, but also will save it money on its recycling contract. It currently pays to have plastic bottles sorted and recycled, whereas aluminum cans will be collected and sold for cash.
