Steve Kordek, coin-op trading cards

DeKALB, IL -- The Star Worlds Arcade here teamed up with Twin Galaxies International (Ottumwa, IA) for a gala event honoring the legacy of the late Steve Kordek, a legendary game designer who made an indelible impression on pinball during his 75-year involvement with the coin-op industry. Six members of Kordek's family were guests of honor, and his granddaughter expressed their thanks for the festive tribute to his memory.

Walter Day of Twin Galaxies, which publishes Twin Galaxies' Official Video Game & Pinball Book of World Records, reported that the occasion also was marked by the official release of the "Superstars of 2012" electronic-game trading cards. This year's series honors Kordek, as well as other coin-op icons.

Attending were many celebrated game designers, including Brian Eddy, Larry DeMar, Steve Ritchie and Mark Ritchie. "DeMar and Steve Ritchie were also honored with trading cards during the weekend as we turned the weekend into a celebration of Chicago's coin-op legacy," Day said.

Star Worlds, founded in 1985 by its present owner, Patrick O'Malley, is an original neighborhood arcade. As part of the ceremonies, Star Worlds was presented with a trading card commemorating its induction into the International Registry of Historic Video Game Arcades, an organization founded by Twin Galaxies in 1998. Both Star Worlds and Tom Blankley of Friar Tuck's Arcade (formerly in Calumet City, IL) received these cards.

According to Day, a highlight of the event was watching the Kordek family enjoying the arcade's games. He believes that enthusiasm for coin-op amusements is encoded in the DNA of the Kordek lineage.

Information on Twin Galaxies' promotional activities on behalf of electronic games and its archival and historiographic endeavors may be found at the organization's website, twingalaxies.com. The game-themed trading card sets are described at videogametradingcards.com.
