KAR NUT PRODUCTS CO. RECALLS VARIOUS ALMOND PRODUCTS DUE TO POSSIBLE HEALTH RISK
FERNDALE, MI - Kar Nut Products Co., based here, is recalling various Kar Nut branded packages of mixes containing raw almonds because they have the potential to be contaminated with Salmonella, a bacterium that causes food poisoning.
The UPC numbers (and code dates) of the specific items being recalled are: #7703400461 (11/19/04), #7703400466 (01/05/05), #7703400471 (01/21/05), #7703400472 (01/17/05), #7703400650 (01/19/05), #7703400950 (11/05/04-11/20/04), #7703400952 (11/05/04-11/19/04) and #7703400954 (11/04/04-11/14/04).
The recalled product was manufactured with almonds received from Paramount Farms and was distributed nationwide through the automatic vending channel and retail stores. This recall follows a voluntary recall announced in mid-May by Paramount Farms of California of whole and diced raw almonds based on more than 20 possible cases of illnesses associated with the almonds. The cases were reported in California, Arizona, Oregon, Washington, Utah, New Mexico, Arkansas, Tennessee, Massachusetts and Michigan.
"We are working with the FDA to assure that all potentially contaminated almonds are removed from the marketplace and that consumers are notified of the recall," Kar Nut officials said. Production of the affected product has been suspended while the FDA and Paramount Farms continue their investigation as to the source of the problem. Kar Nut Products Co. can be contacted at tel.
