LEXINGTON, SC --Aubrey Eugene "Gene" Rountree died here at his home on June 9. He was 74.
Rountree founded Food Service Inc. in Lexington in 1967, providing vending services to business and industry locations. The company expanded services and regions to become one of the Carolinas' leading foodservice management providers.
Rountree is remembered for his dedication to his team and his mantra: "Take care of our people who take care of our customers."
Prior to founding Food Service Inc., Rountree worked for Price-Waterhouse for six years after graduating from the University of South Carolina with a degree in accounting.
The vending veteran named longtime employee Gaye Tankersley president of Food Service Inc. in February 2011. He had served as the company's chairman since.
Rountree was active in his community, where served as the president of the Lexington Chamber of Commerce and chair of the Economic Development Council for the Midlands. He also served as commissioner and treasurer for Midlands Technical College, president of Lexington School Facilities, board chair of the Easter Seals of South Carolina and chair of MUSC Hollings Cancer Center Citizens Advisory Council.
He was also active at Lexington Baptist Church, where he has served as deacon, Sunday school teacher and finance committee chair.
He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Emily; daughters, Dana Andrassy, Julie Durnford (Shawn), Gina Hammond (Mark), Maria Rountree (Jeff Monts), Amy Rountree (Jeff Eichhorn); and 14 grandchildren.
The family will receive friends Monday, June 10, from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at Thompson Funeral Home at 4720 Augusta Rd. in Lexington.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, June 11, at Lexington Baptist Church at 308 E. Main St., Lexington SC. Burial will follow in Woodridge Memorial Park.
