DemROCKracy: TouchTunes Continues Its Music, Politics Mix

NEW YORK CITY — A special Rock The Vote playlist went live on TouchTunes jukeboxes today, six weeks before the general presidential election. It features music from the music provider’s DemROCKracy band competition – Jackie V. (Austin, TX), Otep (Los Angeles) and Mae (Norfolk, VA) – along with major artists Good Charlotte, Wyclef Jean and Christina Aguilera.

The Rock The Vote competition, promoted on TouchTunes boxes, encouraged bands with MySpace pages to reach out to their fans and ask them to register to vote. The bands that registered the most voters through Rock The Vote’s voter registration tool on MySpace won various prizes, including a spot in a TouchTunes playlist. More than 3,000 bands signed up and almost 5,000 people registered to vote during the competition, officials report.

“We’re happy to give these up-and-coming bands a very special opportunity for nationwide exposure on our network, in the right places with the right audience,” said TouchTunes chief marketing officer Ron Greenberg.

TouchTunes also is running its second election survey on 15,000 digital jukebox screens nationwide that will ask for users’ opinions about the upcoming Presidential election. It also will promote Rock The Vote’s mission: to encourage voter registration among young people.

Called “Rock the Vote and Make a Difference,” the TouchTunes onscreen survey includes questions such as “Which musician would make the best Secretary of State?” and “What should be this year’s election anthem?”

“With the Presidential election right around the corner, Rock The Vote is working diligently to reach as many unregistered voters as possible,” Greenberg said. “TouchTunes offers a unique outlet to connect with hard-to-reach 21- to 34-year-olds.”

The company’s first Rock The Vote survey ran in May. According to Greenberg, it collected 10,000 email addresses from users interested in receiving voter registration information. See story here.

“We’d like to see at least as many people seeking information in the second survey, registering and voting,” Greenberg said. “Plus it’s fun to answer the survey questions – and we’ll release the results nationally – personally, I’m voting for Eddie Vedder for secretary of state!”
