Oregon May Make Cigarettes A Prescription Drug
TAGS: cigarette vending machine, vending, cigarettes as prescription drug, Oregon cigarette law, prescription cigarette law, Mitch Greenlick, tobacco ban
SALEM, OR -- In Oregon, cigarettes would become a prescription drug, as tightly regulated as anabolic steroids, if state lawmakers pass a bill proposed by Rep. Mitch Greenlick (D-Portland).
A doctor's prescription would be required to purchase cigarettes in the state. Anyone who either sold or smoked cigarettes without a prescription could spend a year in prison and pay a $6,250 fine. | SEE STORY
Such a law would likely affect the remaining cigarette vending machines in Oregon, where a state law makes it illegal to sell cigarettes and smokeless tobacco products through self-service mechanical devices except in facilities off limits to minors.
