SEATTLE – On June 1, Starbucks began prohibiting anyone up to 25 feet from its stores from lighting up.

The new restriction is intended to extend smoke-free zones to outside seating areas (the Seattle coffee giant already bans smoking inside its cafés). It applies to all 7,000 company-owned cafés in the U.S. and Canada, regardless of whether or not they have outdoor seating.

Other Starbucks locations -- including licensed shops located within such retailers as Target and Barnes & Noble -- are exempt.
