WATERBURY, VT -- Green Mountain Coffee Roasters Inc. has appointed Brian Kelley president and chief executive, effective Dec 3. He will succeed Lawrence J. Blanford, who is retiring.

Kelley, 51, joins the Vermont roaster and Keurig single-cup brewer maker from Coca-Cola Co., where he led the integration of the acquisition of Coca-Cola Enterprises to create Coca-Cola Refreshments. He joined the beverage giant in 2007 and was slated to become president of its refreshments unit in January. Kelley has also led Sirva Inc., a provider of relocation services, and held executive posts at Ford Motor Co. and Procter & Gamble Co.

Kelley will be Green Mountain's third chief executive. Blanford assumed the role from the company's founder, Bob Stiller, in 2007.

Green Mountain's new chief joins the company at a time when it's facing increasing competition from Keurig-compatible portion packs from other roasters and brands that fit into Keurig brewers. It's also facing pressure from Starbucks Corp., which recently began selling its own single-serve coffee and latte maker, called the Verismo.
