Roger Sharpe, pinball, Sharpe Communications ARLINGTON HEIGHTS, IL -- Roger Sharpe has been named chief executive of Sharpe Communications, a creative services company he founded more than 10 years ago. The Arlington Heights, IL, firm specializes in licensing, advertising, marketing, public relations, and product design and development.

Sharpe recently exited WMS Industries Inc., a Chicago-based electronic gaming company, where he has worked for the past 26 years, most recently as director of brand licensing for the WMS Gaming unit. In 2013, WMS became a wholly owned subsidiary of Scientific Games.

In the coin-op industry, Sharpe is well known for his long association with pinball. He was a machine designer at Game Plan and served as marketing and licensing director at Williams/Bally/Midway for 12 years. His Pinball (E.P. Dutton, 190 pages) was published in 1977 and remains one of the most sought-after books about the history of pinball machines. In 1976, when pinball was still illegal in New York City, Sharpe appeared before the City Council to demonstrate that the game was not a gambling device, and he succeeded.

Sharpe is a cofounder of the International Flipper Pinball Association, which ranks players and promotes the game. He currently ranks No. 486 in a worldwide field of 24,000-plus.
