International Hotel/Motel & Restaurant Trade Show Focuses On ‘Green’ Practices

Emily Jed

WHITE PLANS, NY — The 93rd annual International Hotel/Motel & Restaurant Show will provide an opportunity for industry professionals to better understand how to apply eco-friendly practices in their businesses and discover the latest products that will assist efforts to “go green.” The show will take place November 8-11 at New York City’s Jacob K. Javits Convention Center.

Following a full day of conference and networking activities on Saturday, November 8, the IH/M&RS will feature three full days of exhibits from Sunday through Tuesday, encompassing 1,250 exhibitors and attracting approximately 35,000 foodservice and hospitality industry professionals.

More than 40 seminars of interest to both lodging and foodservice professionals will address sustainability, design, technology, sales and marketing and human resources, among other lively topics.

A “green”-themed keynote presentation delivered by Christine Ervin, environmental leader and former chief executive of the U.S. Green Building Council, will headline the Sunday, November 9, seminar schedule.

Ervin is widely credited as a major force in today’s green building markets. During her five-year tenure as president and chief executive of the U.S. Green Building Council, she launched the LEED green building rating system, the Greenbuild Conference and Expo and numerous governance enhancements to help reach mainstream markets. During the Clinton administration, she was assistant secretary of energy, responsible for the nation’s $1 billion portfolio of clean energy technologies for transportation, buildings, major industries and power systems.

The IH/M&RS has partnered with Green Lodging News for the second year to educate attendees about developments in sustainable practices. Editor and Publisher Glenn Hasek will present “Energy Miser All Stars: Conservation Lessons from the Best” on Saturday. The seminar will feature owners and operators who have managed to reduce their annual energy costs by substantial margins while positively impacting their bottom line, the environment and their standing in their local communities.

In addition, the Green Task Force of the American Hotel & Lodging Association (AH&LA) will address the “going green” transition during a session entitled “Eco-friendly Meets Eco-nomic.”

Following last year’s successful debut of eco-friendly categories within the coveted Editors’ Choice Awards, the IH/M&RS will once again spotlight the best “green” products on the show floor that have been introduced to the market in the past year.

Exhibiting at IH/M&RS for the first time is the New York City Department of Environmental Protection, the governing force behind the city’s water conservation efforts and system accountability.

The International Hotel/Motel & Restaurant Show is sponsored by AH&LA, the Hotel Association of New York City Inc. and the New York State Hospitality & Tourism Association.

A discounted registration fee of $30 is available through October 9, after which it will increase to $50 per person. For additional information, call (914) 421-3206 or (800) 272-SHOW, or visit ihmrs.com.
