DESTIN, FL -- The Sandestin Resort here again will host Southeastern Vending Association for its annual convention. The 2012 six-state event is scheduled for Aug.t 8 through 10 (Wednesday through Friday).
WEDNESDAY, AUG. 8
The festivities commence at 8:30 a.m. on Wednesday with the Wilbur Langston Memorial Golf Tournament, which will be held this year at the Kelly Plantation's championship 18-hole course. The registration fee of $135 includes the culminating cookout lunch and two drink tickets. Registration will be open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., and the convention's platinum and gold sponsors (which include Coca-Cola Refreshments and Vistar, and Burdette Beckmann and USA Technologies, respectively) are planning a number of sessions during the day.
Climaxing the day is an opening night party from 7 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. As has become customary, SEVA plans a "Children's Night Out" from 6:30 p.m. to 10 p.m., during which dinner and a range of crafts and other fun activities will occupy the younger generation while their parents relax.
THURSDAY, AUG. 9
On Thursday, SEVA convention registration reopens at 7 a.m. and closes at 5 p.m. A continental breakfast will welcome early arrivals from 7 a.m. to 8 a.m.
At 8:30 a.m., the formal program begins with an update on the National Automatic Merchandising Association's strategic plan presented by NAMA president and chief executive Carla Balakgie. Following this overview of the association's plans to position the industry for solid growth, NAMA regional legislative director Sheree Edwards will describe the importance of grassroots organization and action in government relations, and emphasize that "NAMA needs you."
From 10:15 a.m. to 11:15 a.m., legendary Nascar driver and sportscaster Kyle Petty will deliver an inspirational address and will host a "meet and greet" from 11:15 a.m. to 12:15 p.m., concurrently with a buffet lunch.
Individual state association meetings are planned for 12:15 p.m. to 1 p.m. SEVA is a cooperative effort of the Alabama Vending Association, Georgia Automatic Merchandising Council, Mississippi Automatic Merchandising Association, Tennessee Automatic Merchandising Association, Vending Machine Operators of Louisiana and Automatic Merchandising Association of Florida, and members of each will meet to conduct business. The SEVA board, made up of representative from each of the sponsoring state councils, will meet immediately afterward.
Thursday's events lead up to the grand finale, a sponsor appreciation reception from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. followed by Supplier Night at 7:30 p.m. Again, a children's night out program will be available to those who need it.
FRIDAY, AUG. 10
Registration reopens at 7 a.m. and closes at noon. A continental breakfast also gets under way at 7 a.m. Following the presentation of golf tournament awards from 8 a.m. to 8:30 a.m., Dr. Michael Kasavana will bring convention-goers up to data on Trends in Vending Technology. Kasavana is NAMA endowed professor at the School of Hospitality Business, Broad College of Business at Michigan State University (E. Lansing), the author of numerous white papers on technical topics and a frequent speaker at NAMA events. His presentation will conclude at 9:45 a.m.
Following a session devoted to coffee and allied beverages from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m., the educational portion of the 2012 SEVA convention will wrap up with a presentation on self-checkout micromarkets, titled "The New Vending Revolution," from 11 a.m. to noon. The remainder of the day's activities will afford ample opportunity for networking, punctuated by a beach volleyball tournament at 2 p.m.
Bringing the 2012 SEVA convention to a festive conclusion will be Disco Night, a gala celebration of the 1970s, from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. Once again, a children's night out program will be available.
