SAN DIEGO, CA --The California Automatic Vendors Council and Arizona Automatic Merchandising Council will hold a combined annual meeting again this year. It's set for the Dana Hotel on Mission Bay in San Diego from Sept. 11 to 13 (Thursday, Friday and Saturday).

The event gets underway on Thursday with three consecutive educational sessions beginning at 1 p.m. VendCentral founder and chief executive Neil Swindale (Pleasanton, CA) will explore the "digital marketing toolbox," describing ways to "attract, close and delight customers" with digital marketing tools such as social media. Swindale is a cold beverage industry veteran and former operator.

Dr. Michael L. Kasavana, the National Automatic Merchandising Association 'sendowed professor in hospitality business at the Eli Broad College of Business's School Hospitality Business at Michigan State University (E. Lansing), will speak on enhancing technology performance. His presentation will address the challenge of choosing technological solutions that are cost-effective and logical, and that enhance profitability.

Rounding out the business program will be a round-table idea exchange in which participants can share experiences and swap opinions about coffee service and micromarket operations including placement, servicing, troubleshooting and the role of single-cup brewing systems.

A welcome reception is planned for Thursday evening, featuring a light dinner and cocktails as well as a spirited Team Trivia game.

Friday will be devoted to networking in the scenic San Diego area. The 25th annual Bob Tonne Golf Tournament is set for the Riverwalk Golf Club; registration opens at 7 a.m. for a shotgun start at 7:30 a.m, and the format is four-person scramble.

Non-golfers may choose a Friday morning Old Town Trolley Seal Tour, which departs from the hotel lobby at 9:45 a.m. Participants will ride in large amphibious vehicles (not trolleys) on an excursion through the most interesting sights of the city and then directly into the bay. The land-and-sea expedition concludes with lunch at the Harbor House.

CAVC will hold a board meeting from 2:30 p.m. to 4 p.m.; it is open to all members.

On Friday evening, CAVC and AAMC will host cocktails, dinner and a silent auction, starting at 6:30 p.m. and concluding with a live auction at 8:30 p.m. Proceeds of the auction benefit the associations' activities, including their legislative efforts.

A second round of educational programming is slated for Saturday morning, starting at 8:00 a.m. after a continental breakfast and concluding at 12:30 p.m. Speakers at the session will include NAMA president and chief executive Carla Balakgie and chairman Peter Tullio, Gourmet Coffee Service/World Wide Vending (Van Nuys, CA), who will review NAMA plans and priorities in advocacy, education, information and networking.

Rep. Tony Cárdenas (D-CA), Rep. Paul Gosar, DDS (R-AZ) and California state Sen. Joel Anderson (R-San Diego) will take part in an overview of legislative activity at the national and state levels. Legislative consultants Elaine Arena (AAMC) and Jennifer Snyder (CAVC) will offer updates on developments in their respective states.

The business session will conclude with a lively review of recent labor-law changes such as medical marijuana, gun control and route driver overtime. Using a game show format, NAMA labor law attorney Heather Bailey and actress/improviser Lisa Linke will lead participants through a round of "Let's Play CAVC-AAMC Squares."

SANDRA LARSON TRIBUTE

Climaxing the 2014 combined annual meeting will be a festive reception, dinner and state council awards presentation at the nearby Hyatt Regency Mission Bay Spa and Marina, starting at 6:30 p.m. The highlight of the evening will be a special tribute to NAMA senior director and counsel of government affairs Sandra Larson. Themed "Dancing with the Star," the event will honor Larson for her 18 years of commitment, dedication and service to AAMC, CAVC and the national association. Immediately thereafter, participants can take to the dance floor, and will have the opportunity to tread a measure with Larson herself.

Registration for CAVC and AAMC members is $175 per adult and $99 per child (up to 12 years old); for nonmembers, the fee is $225 per adult, $150 per child. Industry members able to attend only on Saturday will be accommodated by a special rate of $100 for CAVC and AAMC members and $150 for nonmembers.

The enrollment fee for the Bob Tonne Golf Classic is $150 per golfer; a foursome discount rate of $550 is available. The charge covers greens fees, practice balls and lunch. Hole sponsorships are available for $250. Information may be had from golf chairman Chuck Treister by calling him at (877) 524-2485. The deadline for enrollment is September 3.

Enrollment in the Seal Tour is $40 per adult participant.

Industry members wishing to donate prizes for the silent and live auctions may contact CAVC auction chair Lisa Mattias, (714) 335-7363, or AAMC's Cathy Feeley, (714) 875-7296. Deadline for auction items is Aug. 27. Information on the CAVC-AAMC annual meeting may be had from Deborah Lara at the NAMA western office (Pasadena, CA) by calling (626) 229-0900 or faxing to (626) 229-0777.
