MONTGOMERY, AL -- State Attorney General Troy King, an outspoken supporter of electronic bingo machines, lost his bid to keep his job in a primary election this week by a vote of two to one. Three county commissioners who also supported electronic bingo in Houston County, home of the Country Crossing resort and bingo hall, lost primary races as well.

Meanwhile, bingo operators near the city of Bessemer said they would shut down electronic bingo operations at 6 p.m., Friday, June 4, to avoid being raided by the Governor's Task Force on Illegal Gambling. The taskforce was recently reactivated by a state Supreme Court ruling (see story). Timing of the Bessemer bingo shutdown was planned to coincide with the precise moment of the official taskforce reactivation.
