DES MOINES, IA -- Iowa's Senate Study Bill 1165, which includes a section for legalizing Internet poker for state residents only, will soon be eligible for a vote before the full Senate. The measure passed the so-called "funnel deadline" on March 4, a key threshold designed to winnow out bills that lack enough support to deserve serious consideration.

Sen. Jeff Danielson (D-Waterloo), chairman of the Senate's state government committee, introduced the law in late February.

But according to a story in the Des Moines Register, a California company called U.S. Digital Gaming is a "leading driver" of poker legalization. USDG seeks to run the Internet hub that casinos would use to operate online gaming. | SEE STORY

Under Danielson's bill, Iowa residents 21 years and older would have to be approved to gamble under guidelines defined by the state. Consumers could then deposit money in a special account that is controlled by a specially licensed casino, entitling them to visit a password-protected poker website to play.

California and Florida are also considering legalization of online gambling. New Jersey passed an online casino measure in January, but Gov. Chris Christie vetoed it in early March. | SEE STORY
