BLOOMINGTON, MN -- The Minnesota Operators of Music and Amusements has scheduled its annual summer conference for June 9 and 10 here at the Radisson by the Mall of America. The venue is new for the Minnesota operators, who in recent years held their annuals at scenic fishing resorts in the northern part of the state.

"MOMA selected this facility because the cost per member will be considerably less than in past years," reports MOMA executive director Chuck Leininger. He estimated that all combined meeting and hotel costs should be less than $150 a day, and noted that this Radisson, which is connected to the state's largest water park, has rooms that can comfortably accommodate a family of five. The association also has obtained 40 tickets for a Twins game on June 9.

The Minnesota operators will assemble on Wednesday, June 9, at 9 a.m. with a meeting about darts. Business resumes with a pool meeting at 1 p.m., following lunch at noon. The promotion of leagues and tournaments is a key objective for MOMA, which has developed programs that address the needs of pool and dart players. Both meetings are expected to spur lively discussion.

At 3:30 p.m., Leininger will host MOMA members and guests at a reception. The excursion to Target Field for the ballgame begins at 5 p.m.

MOMA's annual membership meeting, at which officers and directors are elected, will be held Thursday, June 10, at 9 a.m. The board of directors will convene at 10 a.m. Thursday's agenda includes breakfast at 8 a.m., lunch at noon and golf at 2 p.m. Dinner will take place in the hotel restaurant.

Last year, the MOMA board chose Leininger to succeed Hy Sandler as MOMA's executive director. Sandler had retired after two decades of distinguished service to the association. Leininger came to MOMA from CDL Music & Games, an operation he owned and sold to Mendota Valley Amusement (Inver Grove Heights).

Sandler's wife Betty, a fixture at MOMA functions for decades, died on April 5. They were married for 65 years. "She would always greet you and never forget your name," Leininger said. Condolences can be sent to Hy Sandler at 3630 Phillips Pkwy., St. Louis Park, MN 55426.

Founded in 1967 as the Music Operators of Minnesota, the association added "amusements" to its name in 1984 to reflect all coin- and currency-activated equipment that its members operate in the state. MOMA began a scholarship fund in 1991. It awarded five $1,000 scholarships last year.

Information on the upcoming MOMA summer conference and Twins game can be had by calling Leininger at (612) 363-2894 or emailing chuckleininger@hotmail.com.
