WASHINGTON -- President Obama signed the Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act into law on Dec. 13. The $4.5 billion expansion of the school lunch program was passed by the Senate in late summer and cleared the House of Representatives early this month.

The new law is designed to expand the number of children enrolled in school lunch programs by 115,000, increase the reimbursement rate paid to school districts by 6¢ a meal, and require that foods and beverages sold outside the federally subsidized programs -- through à la carte lines, school stores, vending machines and events such as bake sales -- conform to government nutritional standards.
