SYRACUSE, NY -- Vending machines are a focal point at this year's Great New York State Fair, where they're offering fair-goers easy access to some of the state's best homegrown products, and generating publicity for them at the same time.
Proceeds from the machines at the fair, which opened in Syracuse on Aug. 21 and runs through Sept. 1, will benefit the Food Bank of Central New York.
The State Department of Agriculture and Markets coordinated the initiative with the New York State Automatic Vending Association. Two machines are located in Gov. Andrew Cuomo's booth, and three others are placed around the grounds.
Taste NY vending machines will also be deployed at select Department of Transportation rest areas across the state in the coming weeks as part of Cuomo's $2 million marketing plan for state-made products. | READ MORE
The New York State Commission for the Blind, through its Business Enterprise Program, will be implementing the rollout of the rest of the machines in cooperation with DOT shortly after the fair.
Cicarelli Vending, based in Syracuse, is servicing the machines at the fair. They're stocked with a rotating selection of food and beverages from producers all across the state, highlighted in onscreen video clips.
Featured products include Finger Lakes Fresh sliced apples, Red Jacket Orchard juices, Heluva Good Cheese curds and string cheese, Chobani yogurt, Sweet Sam's cookies, Peeled Snacks dried fruit and Stone Cold Creamery shakes.
"At the 2014 Great New York State Fair, thanks in large part to Cuomo's Taste NY initiative, New York agriculture will have the most prominent place at the table," said state agriculture commissioner Richard A. Ball. "These vending machines will complement existing stores and kiosks located throughout the state, and expand opportunities for New York food and beverage producers."
"The New York State Vending Association and partners are proud to present Taste NY machines at the state fair in Syracuse this year," said NYSAVA vice-president John Murn, Answer Vending (Farmingdale, NY). "A special thanks to Cicarelli Vending for supporting the project at the state fair."
