Playbook For Vending And OCS: OneShow Education Keeps Operators On Top Of Their Game

CHICAGO -- An educational program covering all the industry's hot topics will deliver the tools operators need to drive their businesses forward at the National Automatic Merchandising Association's 2011 OneShow. The 75th anniversary confab is set for April 27 through 29 at McCormick Place in Chicago.

Keynoting the vending and coffee service industry's largest trade show and convention will be former New York City mayor Rudolph Giuliani. Legendary basketball coach Tom Izzo of Michigan State University will serve as master of ceremonies at the OneShow Industry Awards Ceremony.

An updated and expanded Supervisor Development program, designed for managers at all levels, will make its debut at OneShow. The program, which requires separate registration, will begin prior to the formal start of the show, on Monday, April 25 at noon and run until 7 p.m. It will continue on Tuesday, April 26, from 8 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. and wrap up on Wednesday, April 27, from 8 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.

The program sessions, taught by industry professionals, business consultants and a university professor, have been expanded, and a new workshop has been added. New topics this year include successful project management, personal leadership development, general management decision-making, effective communication and time management, coaching for top performance, and "human resources 101."

Real-world scenarios will be addressed through mini case studies, class discussions and brainstorming with industry peers. Supervisors leave the program with hands-on ideas to help them solve problems and improve their business skills to more effectively lead their teams.

OneShow will also mark the kickoff of NAMA's updated and expanded two-part Quality Coffee Certification Program, which also requires separate advance registration. Led by coffee veteran Mike Tompkins of Coffee Products Associates (Bloomingdale, IL), the Brewing Fundamentals workshop will be held from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Tuesday, April 26; Coffee Fundamentals runs from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Wednesday, April 27.

During the Brewing Fundamentals segment, participants will learn the basic theory and principles involved in preparing filtered coffee. New this year will be results from an in-depth study of single-portion products and equipment. After learning the techniques, participants will take part in a hands-on evaluation of single-cup coffee systems.

In the Coffee Fundamentals portion of the workshop, the registrants will learn about the development of coffee flavor qualities from the country of origin. Guided tasting exercises will help the group experience the nuances of single-origin and blended coffees. New to this segment is an expanded water filtration workshop addressing the effect of water quality on coffee's flavor profile.

Three concurrent sessions lead off the programming on Wednesday morning from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m.

Dr. Michael Kasavana, NAMA-endowed professor at Michigan State University (East Lansing, MI), will moderate a two-part discussion of "The Benefits Of Cashless And Other Vending Technologies." During the first hour's block of instruction, he will offer an overview of new applications including automated product recognition, "permission marketing" and retail kiosk developments. The second hour's session will focus on the latest cashless vending solutions, offering details on system requirements, transaction costs, processing options, online resources and communication needs. Industry suppliers and operators will explain how electronic transactions are monitored, secured and transmitted between banks, card associations and vending operators. They will also detail the process of converting existing machines for cashless acceptance.

The Coffee & Water Service Operator Symposium, previously known as the Coffee Service Open Forum, will be moderated this year by Jeff Deitchler, general manager of PrairieFire Coffee Roasters (Wichita, KS). Panel members include Steve Hyde of Brew-Tek (Land O' Lakes, FL), Mark Marino, Baronet Coffee (Hartford, CT), and Tom Steuber of Associated Coffee & Water Service (San Leandro, CA).

Each panelist will host a breakout session to discuss a specific topic related to the coffee and water industry. Panel members then will share key points from their breakout topics and answer questions.

Rounding out Wednesday morning's educational options is a three-part federal legislation update. The vending and coffee service industry has been affected by an abundance of laws and regulations in the past year, including healthcare legislation, calorie-disclosure requirements, proposed sugar taxes, machine accessibility issues based on the Americans with Disabilities Act, changes to coins and currency, 1099 requirements and more.

Representatives from federal agencies, including the Food and Drug Administration, the Department of Justice and the Small Business Administration will clarify these issues, discuss their impact on the vending business and suggest what NAMA can do on behalf of its members.

The first topic to be addressed, at 9 a.m., will be "How Can Vending Operators Effectively Comply With FDA-Required Calorie Disclosures?" Following at 10 a.m. will be "What Impact Do the New ADA Regulations Have on Types of Vending Machines I Can Place in Locations?"; and "Economic Incentives, Tax Increases, Tax Breaks and Credits -- What Can Be Done to Help Vending and Coffee Companies Grow and Prosper?" will wrap up the discussion.

Agency representatives will be available for individual consultation. They will also meet with showgoers interested in further discussion in a designated part of the exhibit area.

The program continues on Wednesday with a series of concurrent sessions from 11:15 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. These will include a presentation on industry and consumer research insights by NAMA executive vice-president and chief operating officer Dan Mathews and John Healy of Healy & Schulte Inc. The presenters will share new industry and consumer research findings gathered from operators, product suppliers and other industry members, along with Generation Y, Generation X and Baby Boomer consumers. They will shed light on which generational group favors vending most, gaps between industry and consumer perceptions, and how these new findings stack up to similar research conducted in 2006. The speakers will also offer tips on how operators can use the new data on consumer perceptions to build stronger businesses.

Fred Parrish, president of The Profit Experts (Allen, TX) will lead an interactive session titled "Find Your Profit Leaks." He will share several tools designed specifically to help coffee and water service operators easily calculate inventory turns, route profitability, revenue charting and gross margin analysis. Participants will take home formatted spreadsheets on a flash memory device that will enable them to track sales and inventory in their own operations.

Rounding out the concurrent seminars, labor and employment legal expert Heather Bailey will provide background and clarification on the impact and intricacies of the new federal healthcare reform package. The major focus will be the importance of "grandfathered" healthcare plans, and the deadlines and mandates for the various changes employers must make to their existing plans. Bailey will also discuss the mandates and penalties for employers who do not implement the mandated healthcare plans.

Wednesday's education program concludes with a workshop from 12:30 p.m. to 2 p.m. led by Dr. Mark L. Frigo, director of the Center for Strategy, Execution and Valuation at Chicago's DePaul University, titled "Want to Grow Your Business Profitably?"

Frigo, an advisor to the chief executive officers of Fortune "500" companies, will share techniques and approaches used by successful entrepreneurs and business leaders to develop profitable growth opportunities and increase the value of their companies. During his presentation, Frigo will explore the forces of change such as new technologies, changes in consumer buying habits, regulatory and political pressures, environmental concerns and social and cultural factors, and how they affect today's business landscape.

CREAM OF THE CROP
NAMA's Innovation Award ceremony will immediately follow, on the OneShow Center Stage. Chosen by an independent judging panel of innovation experts, winners will be recognized for breakthrough thinking, products or processes that advance the industry's image, growth and profitability.

A high-spirited event led by Drum Café will build excitement just before the trade show opens. Showgoers will gather at Center Stage and each will be given a drum to beat during the interactive session themed "Building Teams One Beat at a Time." The exhibit area will be open from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Wednesday.

Former New York City mayor Giuliani's address on "Principled Leadership: In the Face of Change and Crisis," will kick off the day's events on Thursday, April 28, from 8:30 a.m. to 10 a.m., at Center Stage in the exhibit. Giuliani, who helped lead the city and the nation through the aftermath of the terrorist attacks of 9/11, will share his principles of leadership, explain how effective leadership can lead to profitability and demonstrate how people can use these seemingly simple principles to inspire excellence from the team around them.

Closing the day's events at 4:30 p.m., Michigan State University Spartans coach Tom Izzo, the longest-tenured coach in the NCAA Big 10 Conference and four-time national Coach of the Year, will emcee the NAMA Vending Industry awards ceremony (see sidebar). Showgoers will have the opportunity to meet the coach and the award winners at a reception celebrating the association's 75th anniversary.

NAMA's "Vending and Coffee Service 101" is back by popular demand on Friday, April 29 from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m. Vic Pemberton, president of Pepi Food Service (Bainbridge, GA) and NAMA's 2007 Vending Operator of the Year, will lead the interactive session focused on the fundamentals of business success. Areas for discussion will include route and warehouse management, sales and customer service, technology, coffee service, foodservice and vending services. Pemberton will also share his experience with the factors that motivate employees and the keys to a profitable operation.

A highlight of the education program at OneShow will be a series of half-hour Operator Perspectives sessions on Center Stage in the exhibit area. Experienced vendors will offer concise presentations on a specific topic, after which the audience can ask questions and offer comments.

The first, dealing with technology in general and cashless vending in particular, will be held on Wednesday afternoon, starting at 5 p.m. The second series, gets under way on Thursday, April 28, at 11 a.m., and will cover loss prevention, timely customer service ("37 million service calls") and unattended retailing, Another session will explore profitability, at 4:30 p.m. And a wrapup presentation is set for 11 a.m. on Friday, exploring coffee service.

OneShow wraps up on Friday with a performance on Center Stage from 9 a.m. to 10 a.m. by Capital Steps, a nationally acclaimed political satire troupe. The exhibit closes at 2 p.m.
