MELROSE PARK, IL -- Stern Pinball Inc. has launched a limited market test of a redesigned Batman flipper game with less complex playfields, more limited features and a lower cost.

A total of 48 of these games will be sold by Costco outlets in 16 cities around the country; each store has received three games. The streamlined Batman games are factory-preset for free play, and incorporate a simplified coin mech with a fixed setting that gives five credits for one coin.

When this limited run is gone, Stern will manufacture no more of these test Batman games. If the test is successful, the company plans to simplify the design further for "tested market segments." The redesign process will include greatly simplifying the cabinet, replacing the present dot-matrix score display.

Stern said it will continue to build its full line of traditional coin-operated flipper games, as well as collector models. The company claims to be "the only coin-op pinball manufacturer on the planet."
