CHICAGO -- Hundreds of union workers and key Chamber of Commerce leaders rallied at Chicago City Hall on April 26 to show their support for video poker. City Council committee chairman Eugene Schulter (alderman from the 47th ward) said the group persuaded him that his committee should hold hearings on the legalization question.

Chicago currently bans video poker machines. Approval of poker legalization by Chicago is considered crucial to the financial and political success of Illinois Video Gaming Act, which allows independent operators to run the games. The measure was passed by the state Legislature in 2009 and signed by Gov. Pat Quinn as part of an omnibus $31 billion fundraising measure.

The City Hall rally was organized Back to Work Illinois, a lobbying organization headed by a former campaign chairman for Chicago Mayor Richard Daley. The group is funded by the video gaming industry and the Illinois Coin Machine Operators Association, among other groups.

Mayor Daley raised the possibility of a voter referendum on VLT legalization on April 23, according to the Chicago Tribune.
