CHAMBERSBURG, PA -- Students at Chambersburg Area Senior High School here will soon get a hands-on introduction to vending by operating 40 of their own machines. These will be installed by CRH Catering Co. Inc. of Connellsville, PA, according to the local Public Opinion News.
Students will be responsible for ordering product, merchandising the machines, and keeping the equipment and areas around it clean.
Along with sodas, candies and crackers, the machines will be stocked with better-for-you alternatives.
Chambersburg high school principal Buddy Chapel described the venture as a "real-world experience" for students and said the idea came from his previous school, where vending machines were run by the PTA. The school board approved the plan on Sept. 12 by a 9-0 vote.
Chapel said machines will be placed throughout the building, but not near the cafeteria. They will be disabled during the 90-minute lunch period so as not to compete with the cafeteria.
