SFM Critical Issues Conference Tackles Obesity, Legislation On April 15

MT. LAUREL, NJ -- Topics of immediate concern to professional foodservice managers will be addressed at two workshops on April 15, organized by the Society for Foodservice Management. The SFM 2010 Critical Issues Conference will be presented live in New York City, and video-conferenced to the Seattle area.

The New York meet will be hosted by Credit Suisse and Restaurant Associates (New York City) at Credit Suisse headquarters, 1 Madison Ave. (between 23rd and 24th Streets). Registration opens at noon (EDT), and the meeting will run from 1 p.m. to 5:15 p.m. A networking reception will follow from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.

The Seattle videoconference is being hosted by Microsoft Corp. in its Building 33 at 16070 N.E. 36th Way, Redmond, WA, and by Compass Group (Charlotte, NC). Registration opens at 9 a.m. (PDT), and the meeting is scheduled for 10 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.

Both workshops will feature expert presentations interspersed with networking breaks and, in Seattle, a light lunch from 11:45 a.m. to 12:15 p.m.

Society for Foodservice Management president Ann McNally, Morgan Stanley (New York City), will welcome conference-goers and deliver a brief opening address. Derek Yach, senior vice-president of Global Health for PepsiCo (Somers, NY) then will discuss the underlying causes of the reported obesity epidemic, its likely economic and health impact, and emergent trends.

Ned Monroe, senior vice-president of government affairs for the National Automatic Merchandising Association, then will address "Government Impact on Your Company's Bottom Line." Monroe will survey the likely effect of the increased attention being called by health groups and the media to food safety and nutrition, and the increased desire for new sources of government revenue, on legislation and regulation that can have a dramatic impact on how foodservice companies do business and relate to their customers.

The second session will offer a variety of approaches to dealing with these issues. Veteran publisher Gerald J. (Jerry) White will moderate a panel discussion of best practices developed to navigate through health-related issues. Panelists include Brian Schwagerl, Hearst Corp. (New York City), Betty Perez, New Jersey University of Medicine and Dentistry Hospital (Newark) and Regina Toomey Bueno, New York University. First-session presenters Yach and Monroe will offer additional insights.

The third session will be led by Terry Adams, Adams Consulting Group (Princeton, NJ), who will speak on how to manage multiple services during turbulent times, offering key techniques to help manage the variety of tasks encountered every day, making the most effective use of limited time available for each.
