Gov. Cuomo Vetoes Vending Sales Tax Exemption Bill

ALBANY, NY -- Gov. Andrew Cuomo vetoed a bill seeking to increase the tax exemption in New York state for vended food and beverages from 75¢ to $1.50. The legislation, which the New York State Automatic Vending Association helped to create, passed the state Senate and Assembly in June and was awaiting the governor's signature or veto.

The vending association has worked for several years on the passage of the legislation (a7705 by Magee and s5219 by Libous). In September, NYSAVA lobbyist Tim Sheridan of Albany-based Capitol Group LLC informed New York-based vending operators that Cuomo had vetoed the bill last year and said he had wanted it to be part of the state budget. The legislation was absent from this year's budget, too, which concerned Sheridan.

"We're working as hard as we can to get him to sign it, despite it not being in the budget," the lobbyist said at NYSAVA's September meeting in White Plains. "We're also working the back alleys in Albany, telling legislators to put it in the budget."
