TOKYO -- Japan's two leading videogame manufacturers reported improved results for the first quarter of fiscal 2011, ended June 30.

Sega Sammy posted gross revenue of $1 billion, a 51% increase, for the quarter. Just over half of Sega's quarterly revenue came from sales of pachinko and "pachislot" machines, pinball-style gambling devices for the Asian market. Sega said sales of these devices totaled $566 million. Net profits for the quarter were $80.8 million. The company recorded an operating loss of $7 million.

Namco Bandai enjoyed some improvement, cutting first-quarter losses to $18.7 million compared with $33 million for the first quarter of last year. Namco's net sales for the quarter were about $82 million.

Both Sega and Namco reported weak sales of most home videogame titles, a mainstay for the Japanese entertainment giants.
