FreshDirect Vending Program Brings Gourmet Meals To NYC Offices
LONG ISLAND CITY, NY — FreshDirect, an online grocer that delivers groceries and meals throughout metropolitan New York, has begun placing vending machines in corporate offices to dispense upscale meals. FreshDirect's vending menus are being developed in conjunction with popular Manhattan restaurants.
Entrees cost patrons between $7 and $10 and range from chicken tikka masala to beef short rib enchiladas. Additionally, through a partnership with Eating Well magazine, FreshDirect has produced a line of co- branded vegetarian meals for sale through the vending machines, according to The New York Times.
Fresh Direct will reportedly install and service the machines free of charge in locations with high enough traffic to justify their placement. The grocer says it stocks the venders with fresh meals twice a week and keeps close track of inventory through remote monitoring.
As part of a new outreach program called "Smart Eating at the Office," FreshDirect will now send its chefs and nutritionists to workplace customers to brief employees on healthy eating free of charge, The New York Times reported. The program is the company's first initiative to market FreshDirect at the Office, a service it launched three years ago to cater to businesses in Manhattan.
FreshDirect began delivering groceries in Manhattan in 2002 and now delivers to all five boroughs as well as parts of Nassau County, New Jersey and Westchester County. The company has also expanded its services to provide customers recipes, diet tips and its own branded line of meals on its website.
Beverage, Environmental Groups Pact For Recycling Initiative
WASHINGTON — America's nonalcoholic beverage industry and The Climate Group are joining forces in an effort to dramatically increase recycling. Under the agreement, the American Beverage Association, with its Full Circle Plan, becomes a founding member of The Climate Group's Recycle Together initiative.
The objective of Recycle Together is to identify and promote effective and efficient methods to increase recycling and then share best practices with community leaders seeking to begin or strengthen their recycling programs.
The Climate Group was created in 2004 to bring together business and government to develop solutions to tackle climate change. Through its partnership with the American Beverage Association, Recycle Together members will work in tandem to reach out to city leaders, state leaders and recycling officials to create and promote new approaches to recycling that organizers anticipate will dramatically increase its uptake and inspire other consumer- product industries to join the initiative.
"Our industry already has led the way in reducing the environmental impact of our packaging, from light weighting and using more post-consumer recycled material, to ongoing efforts to reduce waste," said Larry Young, president and CEO of Dr Pepper Snapple Group and chairman of the ABA board of directors. "As a founding partner in The Climate Group's Recycle Together initiative, we look forward to playing an even bigger role in promoting recycling awareness and action among consumers who enjoy our beverages each and every day."
Tomra Introduces Small Footprint Recycling Machine For High-Traffic Venues
SHELTON, CT — New from Tomra of North America is an all-in-one machine designed to easily recycle plastic, glass and aluminum beverage containers, in locations where recycling is not readily available.
Called Uno, the freestanding machine is about the same size as a typical beverage vending machine. It accepts up to 20 containers a minute and holds a maximum of 500 containers. It sorts containers into separate bins depending on material type. Wireless tracking facilitates machine maintenance and access to consumer data.
A key differentiator of Uno over most "reverse venders" is its ability to offer a wide range of immediate recycling rewards or incentives to users, which can be easily customized to each venue's needs to encourage participation. The machine can also be branded, providing incremental advertising revenue.
Tomra said the Uno recycling platform has tested well in several pilot programs throughout the U.S. in sporting arenas, national parks and some retail outlets. Tomra of North America plans to roll out Uno to other high-traffic away-from-home venues, such as universities and college campuses, theme parks, business complexes, convention halls, malls, convenience stores and community centers.

Counterfeiters Used Phony Coinstar Receipts To Steal $5,000
PLAINVILLE, CT — Several supermarkets across Connecticut collectively lost $5,000 over several months this year to a trio of counterfeiters who forged receipts for Coinstar's self-service change- counting machines, according to the Hartford Courant. The crooks did not deposit any coins. They printed their own phony receipts to collect hundreds of dollars at a time.
The Courant said crooks purchased colored inks and special stencils for a fraudulent printing company in order to create sophisticated receipts that defeated Coinstar's anti-counterfeiting measures.
The scheme broke down in mid-October when an alert clerk noticed a typo on a receipt: The word "food" was spelled with an extra "O" (Foood). The clerk notified a police officer who happened to be in the store. The thief was arrested in the parking lot a few minutes later. A subsequent investigation led police to arrest the mastermind of the group in December. A third suspect is expected to turn himself in shortly.

Randy Parks Resigns From NAMA Chairman-Elect Post
CHICAGO — The National Automatic Merchandising Association said that chairman-elect Randy Parks, Pro Star Services (Carrollton, TX), has resigned from his position on the NAMA board of directors. The board has named James Brinton, Evergreen Vending (Seattle), as Parks' replacement. Brinton is NAMA's immediate past chairman.
Parks was named NAMA Industry Leader of the Year and appointed to the NAMA Board in 2004. He has served as an officer of the board since 2006 and also served on the association's Coffee Service Committee. The NAMA board of directors extended warm thanks to Parks for his industry passion, leadership and contributions.
