TAMBOV, Russia -- Solar-powered milk vending machines that dispense fresh milk, and "moo" when a purchase is made, are popping up in this central Russian city.

The bulk-filled dairy venders, designed for indoor and outdoor use, resemble small newsstands. Inside are two tanks, each containing 200 liters (53 gals.) of pasteurized milk held refrigerated at 39°F. Milk remaining in the machine after 24 hours is sent to a local processing plant to produce cheese, and replaced with a fresh supply.

Priced at 1.45 million rubles (about $45,000), the machine reportedly vends 800 liters of milk a day on average.

Russian authorities have installed 10 of the milk venders on streets throughout the city, and plan to deploy more in response to early demand, according to local news agencies.
