CHICAGO -- The Amusement and Music Operators Association and the American Amusement Machine Association have adopted a joint fundraising target of $100,000 to assist with disaster relief in the wake of Hurricane Sandy.
In an early step toward that effort, the board of AMOA's Coin-Op Cares Education & Charitable Foundation on Nov. 1 approved a $10,000 donation to the American Red Cross. AAMA will mobilize its fundraising effort through the American Amusement Machine Charitable Foundation.
AMOA president Andy Shaffer, Shaffer Services (Columbus, OH), said he had obtained "substantial pledges" from TouchTunes, Incredible Technologies and Firestone Financial Corp., among others, that when combined with the Coin-Op Cares donation brought the amount raised by Nov. 1 to more than $40,000. Shaffer asked industry members to make donations by Friday, Nov. 16.

Sandy made landfall on Monday, Oct. 29, at approximately 8 p.m. near Atlantic City, NJ. Devastation was widespread and initial estimates say insured losses will be about $20 billion and the economic damages could exceed $50 billion. The amusement industry has a strong tradition of rallying to assist disaster victims; AMOA and AAMA have led the trade's support campaigns in the aftermath of such tragedies as 2005's Hurricane Katrina in New Orleans and 2010's earthquake in Haiti.
