HILLSBORO, MO -- Charles E. Cross, the founder of Midwest Associates and Midland Marketing Systems, died recently at his home in Arizona. He was 76.

Cross began his career with Universal Match Corp. (St. Louis, MO) in 1958. UMC had acquired National Rejectors Inc. two years earlier, and Cross transferred to that division, where he advanced steadily from service technician to regional manager.

In 1982, he started his own coin and banknote validator service company, Midwest Associates, here. He served as vice-president of Maka USA (now Conlux) three decades ago, and was instrumental in bringing the Maka $1 bill validator to the U.S. market.

Cross retired from the daily operation of his businesses in 2000, while continuing on the board of Midwest Associates, Midland Marketing Systems and his daughter's company, Dieb Enterprises. These three companies still are operating, and are owned by the Cross, Politte and Hunter families. Dieb Enterprises, with more than 80 employees, remains active in repair, maintenance and remanufacturing. It is a certified service center for MEI and an authorized service center for Conlux, and also provides service for most major vending machine brands' control boards.
