THOMASVILLE, GA -- Flowers Foods has promoted Allen L. Shiver to president and chief executive. Shiver, a 33-year veteran of the company and current president, replaces chairman and chief executive George E. Deese on March 22. Deese will become executive chairman of the board.
Deese was elected chief in 2004 and has guided the company through several major acquisitions. Under his leadership, Flowers Foods grew from a regional baked foods company with annual sales of $1.5 billion into the second-largest baking company in the country behind Mexico-owned Bimbo Bakeries USA, with more than $3 billion in sales, according to officials.
In January, Hostess picked Flowers as the top bidder for Wonder and other well-known bread brands. | SEE STORY
Shiver said his plan as he moves into the company's top spot will be to strengthen the company's No. 2 position with a "goal of reaching 75% of the U.S. population with our fresh baked foods three years ahead of schedule."
Flowers Foods posted a $136.1 million profit in 2012, up 10.3% year-over-year.
