Senate Passes School Nutrition Bill

WASHINGTON -- The U.S. Senate has passed the Healthy, Hunger Free Kids Act, which would create new standards for all foods in schools, including vending machine items, to give students healthier meal options.

The new standards would not remove popular foods like pizza from school menus, but would make them "healthier," using more wholesome ingredients like whole-wheat flour or low-fat cheese. Vending machines would be restricted from selling candy and snacks with "minimal nutritional value" and high-calorie sweetened beverages.

Decisions on what kinds of foods will be sold and what ingredients may be limited will be determined by the Agriculture Department.

The bill, sponsored by Sen. Blanche Lincoln (D-AR), chairwoman of the Senate Committee, has been stalled since committee passage in March, and was approved just before the August recess. A similar bill is pending in the House after committee approval last month.
